7 Analyses for Developing High-Quality Online Courses and Training

Quality eLearning Design vs. One-Way Online Instruction

The ability to develop eLearning strategies as part of a comprehensive education plan and then take those strategies from plan to action separates quality eLearning design and engagement from one-way online instruction. Long before the first course is launched, an effective eLearning program begins with strategic planning. No matter how qualified and competent the course producers are, without the foundation built through planning, the program is doomed.

Planning for the program should include several analyses that will help frame the vision for the program, as well as support its future growth and expansion. In the section below, we look at seven analyses that serve as the starting point for creating a strategic plan to support an online educational program.

Strategic Plan Analysis

  • eLearner Needs Analysis: A review of current and potential future learners. Information obtained during this analysis assists the development team with developing an individualized, yet collaborative learning environment for learners. Along with reviewing the learners’ organizational, professional and technological needs, the analysis also considers psychological, cultural, and sociological needs.
  • Performance Measurement Analysis: eLearning programs share a common goal: Provide high quality training to learners. Measuring performance can help program developers understand how well the organization is meeting this goal.  Measurement analysis conducted during the strategic planning phase is used to identify business and individual learner needs and what measures to assess. Measuring performance is important for program improvement and long-term sustainability.
  • Content Analysis: Program design includes identifying the content forms most beneficial for learners, and how they will be developed and used. The analysis also evaluates the process of managing the content and how it will be administered, hosted, and delivered.
  • Delivery Analysis: Delivering the content is one of the most critical components to a sustainable eLearning program. In this analysis, we take a more in-depth look at how the program will be delivered and the learner’s experience – from the time they register, to moving through the curriculum, to completion.
  • Technology Analysis: As we identify the modes of learning participants prefer, and what will work best for delivering the type of content created, we need to identify a technology partner.  In this analysis, we explore what is available to best meet learner needs and what will meet performance measurements. In addition, the analysis looks at future expansion and considers whether the technology can grow with the program.
  • Resource Analysis: From design to delivery, effective eLearning programs use a tremendous amount of resources. Resource Analysis helps identify and explore the resources needed to support the eLearning program – human resources, technological, and financial.
  • Cost Benefit Analysis: Prior to moving to the development phase, a Cost Benefit Analysis is used to identify all of the costs associated with the program and benefits from the program, to determine if the program is sound and feasible.

The objective of the analyses is to translate the results into a strategic plan that begins with the eLearner first and foremost in mind, and is used to create dynamic learner experiences that meet learner needs.
