The Future of Work
Charlie Grantham and Jim Ware, Ph.D.
Co-Founders, Work Design Collaborative
Ever once in awhile the rules change. The work we do, the way we do and where
and when we do will be radically transformed in the next 5 years. Charlie and
Jim's presentation discusses the driving forces of demographics, globalization,
technology diffusion and the changing nature of the social contract between knowledge
workers and the firms, which have traditionally employed them.
Charlie and Jim will also paint a picture of this new world of work based on their
original research in six major companies and 1000 workers. |

Addressing Customer Needs in An Interactive
Customer Service Center
Ramon Rico, Ph.D.
Professor, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid
This presentation will present findings from recent research about the
fit between the characteristics of the task and the type of communications used
by virtual teams. I will discuss the implication of those results for creating
virtual customer service spaces equipped with tools capable of offering contingent
responses to the changing demands of customers that need assistance through a
computer mediated environment. |

Resolving Conflict Virtual Teams
Jenny Brandemuehl
Co-Founder, Virtual Connection
and
Deone Zell
Professor, School of Business Administration, California State University, Northridge
When a team is diverse in work style and culture, the potential for conflict
is high. Add virtual work to the mix and some unique team problems can develop.
The presenters will describe the common pitfalls that virtual teams experience
when conflict arises by describing each stage of a conflict. They will also discuss
how different conflict approaches manifest themselves in virtual team behaviors
and communication. We will offer tools and solutions for effectively resolving
conflicts. |

Virtual Communities of Practice
Soren Kaplan
CEO, iCohere
Building and leading virtual teams and organizations are critical tasks in today’s
distributed business environment. Breakthrough innovation and business effectiveness
comes when individuals, teams, workgroups and even business partners and customers
capture, share, and create new knowledge and opportunities together collaboratively.
A number of strategies can enable collaborative knowledge-sharing that fosters
the capturing and leveraging of best practices for competitive advantage. This
presentation provides an overview of how organizations can drive collaborative
knowledge-sharing across teams, workgroups and the enterprise. Specific case examples
illustrate approaches and processes for integrating collaborative technology with
group processes that foster knowledge-sharing to achieve organizational goals.

Success Factors for Virtual Teams: A Research
Perspective
Susan Cohen
Ph.D. Senior Research Scientist, Center for Effective Organizations, University
of Southern California
Susan's research shows that virtual teams can be either dramatic successes
or dismal failures-or anywhere in-between. Virtual teams amplify both the benefits
and the costs of teamwork. Organizations must create the conditions for effective
virtual teamwork. How to do so is the subject of my presentation. It is based
on a multi-year multi-company research study of 14 virtual teams, which represent
16 organizations, 10 countries, and five industries. |

Telecommuting and the New York City Marathon:
How to Move Forward to the Front of the Pack.
Gil Gordon
President, Gil Gordon Associates
Susan Seitel
President, Work and Family Connection
It took twenty minutes from the time the first entrant crossed the NY Marathon
starting line to when the last entrant crossed it - and by then, the runners in
the front were several miles down the route.
That's what happened with telecommuting implementation in the last 25 years. Some
employers got out in front of the pack and blazed the trail, others started more
slowly, and others fell by the wayside.
In this session, Gil Gordon and Susan Seitel will plot your race course with the
best ways to plan, start, and implement a telecommuting program.
