  Mentoring Across Differences: A Guide to Success Factors
Rita Boags, PhD
Principal Consultant,
Leadership Technologies, LLC

This presentation is based on a recent study into the nature of successful cross-gender and cross-race mentoring relationships in the legal profession. The study examined how women and minority lawyers were able to create successful mentoring relationships within law firms and corporate law departments. The research delved into five facets of mentoring relationships to determine why some new and mid-career lawyers were successful in finding and establishing successful relationships and why others weren't. The five facets that had been reported as being problem areas for cross-gender and cross-race relationships were:
  1. How these relationships are initiated;
  2. How they are cultivated;
  3. The expectations of mentors and mentees;
  4. How trust is built so that open communication can take place; and
  5. How diversity issues are handled in these relationships.

The report contains a guide for improving the mentoring process with recommendations to mentors, mentees and employers. Employers within and outside the legal profession will find many useful suggestions for updating and expanding their mentoring programs.

This study was conducted by Ida Abbott, Esq. and Rita S. Boags, Ph.D. in early 2003 under the sponsorship of the Minority Corporate Counsel Association. The report, Mentoring Across Differences: A Guide to Cross-Gender and Cross-Race Mentoring, can be downloaded at the MCCA website.

Getting Ourselves Unstuck:
How One HP Manager Created a Virtual Coaching Environment to Re-energize Her Team.

Deb Colden
Owner and Manager,
Deb Colden Executive Coaching

and

Meera Manahan
Manager,Customer-Centered Design Services,
Hewlett Packard

When Compaq Computer Corp. merged with HP, it brought veterans of numerous mergers and downsizing. Meanwhile, HP was going through its own challenges, battered by economic hard times, threats of layoffs and a constant need to do more with less. Manager Meera Manahan felt that her HP team, consisting of former HP, Compaq and DEC professionals, needed a chance to focus openly on their personal development if they were to continue to excel in this challenging environment. Despite Meera's desire to support her team, there were several barriers in the way: a cultural belief that it might be dangerous to talk about career aspirations (given downsizing), a travel ban that would prevent her team from going through a workshop together, and limited budgets for personal coaching that could be valuable to each team member. Come hear how Meera teamed up with executive coach Deb Colden to create a virtual coaching experience for the entire team that overcame these barriers and re-invigorated the imagination and energy of the group.

  Coaching as a Management Competency in Global Organizations
Laura Whitworth,
Co-Founder,
The Coaches Training Institute

Taking Coaching Training into organizations for the sake of developing a coaching culture, a coaching program and a 'coach approach' to working with direct reports, managers and customers. "They Just Don't Know How" states Laura Whitworth, CPCC, Master Certified Coach, Co-Founder of The Coaches Training Institutes, The Bigger Game Company and the Time To Change Prison Project, a non profit. Speaking about the path of developing emotional intelligence competencies in mid and upper level managers, Laura discusses the design and delivery of a combination in-person experiential coaching training initiative, along with virtual follow up and peer to peer coaching in two global organizations. Explore why organizations are interested in developing their own internal coaching 'bench' while at the same time hungry to incorporate coaching competencies in their managerial style and their means of being in communication with each other."
