Character Education Partnership

Character Education Partnership CEP is a national advocate and leader for the character education movement. Based in Washington, D.C., we are a nonprofit, nonpartisan, nonsectarian, coalition of organizations and individuals committed to fostering effective character education in our nation's K-12 schools. We are an umbrella organization for character education, serving as the leading resource for people and organizations that are integrating character education into their schools and communities. CEP focuses on defining and encouraging effective practices and approaches to quality character education and provides a forum for the exchange of ideas. CEP's membership includes the nation's leading education organizations and its board of directors is made up of corporate leaders and leading experts in the field of character education.

The Center for the 4th and 5th Rs
The Center for the 4th and 5th Rs, located in the School of Education at the State University of New York at Cortland, was founded in 1994 by education professor Dr. Thomas Lickona.

The Center has trained more than 4,000 principals, teachers, and other educators from 35 states and 14 countries; sponsors an annual High School Conference and Fall Seminar; and provides on-site workshops and training. It publishes print and electronic versions of the newsletter, The Fourth and Fifth Rs and conducts research on character education. Currently, the Center is developing a national Alliance of Smart & Good High Schools.

Developmental Studies Center
DSC is a mission-driven nonprofit education organization headquartered in Oakland, California. For 25 years we have worked with elementary schools to help their students become skilled, motivated readers and caring, principled people.

Recognizing that children's academic, ethical, social, and emotional development are inter-related and interdependent, we have designed in-school and after-school programs that address those dimensions of children's learning in seamlessly coordinated, systemic ways.

Since 1980 DSC's work has been generously supported by grants from more than 40 foundations and governmental agencies. Those grants have enabled us to incorporate rigorous cycles of pilot testing, field testing, evaluation, and revision into the development of our programs. Our work involves very close, long-term collaborations with schools and districts across the country, and with such after-school organizations as the YMCA of the USA and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. These partnerships help to ensure that our programs are practical and feasible to implement, and that they are effective with diverse students in a broad range of settings.

National Center for Community of Caring
Community of Caring is a K-l2, whole school, comprehensive character education program with a unique focus on disabilities. Community of Caring was founded in l982 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver and the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation, and recently moved its national headquarters from Washington, D.C. to the University of Utah, College of Education." It has been adopted by almost 1000 schools nationwide and in Canada. It is research-based and has a proven record of accomplishment. Community of Caring believes that the universally accepted ethical values of caring, respect, responsibility, trust and family are the foundation on which responsible decisions and behaviors are based. Community of Caring schools weave these values into every aspect of school life and the existing curriculum through a framework and components that include:

New Jersey Center for Character Education
The New Jersey Center for Character Education (NJCCE) has been established by the New Jersey Department of Education through a grant from the US Department of Education to provide guidance, leadership and support for public and nonpublic educators developing and implementing character education programs. The Center provides statewide and regional conferences annually, facilitates the work of ten demonstration project school districts, and supports an information dissemination and collegial response forum, the New Jersey Character Education Network.

The Center also provides technical assistance regarding program design and evaluation to school districts in association with the state's Character Education Partnership program of state aid for all school districts.

Western Association of Schools and Colleges
WASC is one of the six regional accreditation agencies in the United States. Its mission is to foster excellence in elementary, secondary, adult and postsecondary institutions, and supplementary education programs.  WASC encourages school improvement through a process of continuing evaluation and recognizes institutions through granting accreditation to the schools that meet an acceptable level of quality in accordance with the established criteria.
