Coherence & Continuity: Weaving Together the Virtual and F2F Community Experience
Vicki Suter
Director, National Learning Infrastructure Initiative

The NLII’s 2-year experience with virtual communities of practice (VCOPs) reinforces the established definitions regarding sustainable purposes such as the sharing of common concerns, working together to fulfill personal & group goals, and interacting on an ongoing basis to deepen knowledge and improve practice. The NLII also sees a VCOP as a social place collectively created through the weaving together of face-to-face meetings and the community’s use of electronic media and web-based collaborative environments to communicate, connect, collaborate, and ultimately, transform practice and generate knowledge. This session will explore community activities that build relationships, create energy and engagement, support the emergence and ongoing reinforcement of community presence, help the community “organize around purposeful actions”, and result in the coherence and continuity necessary for a healthy community.

  Healthy Communities
Richard McDermott, PhD
Consultant, McDermott Consulting

Dr. McDermott describes how the concept of communities of practice has evolved and the characteristics of healthy, mature communities. His observations are based on an assessment of over 50 communities in the oil, technical consulting, telecommunications, pharmaceutical, and defense industries. By comparing healthy and unhealthy communities across industries, he has identified what makes a community healthy and what companies, community leaders and community organizers can do to support them.

The Fundamentals of Establishing Communities of Practice Online
Bronwyn Stuckey
MEd, BEd, GD Ed Studies START
Faculty, University of Wollongong, Australia

This session delivers the findings of a three year research program case studying successful Internet-mediated communities of practice (IMCoPs). The findings offer advice on the fundamental conditions required to design implement and sustain IMCoPs. This research has proven very valuable whether you are charged with intentionally developing new communities, leveraging the value of an existing one or taking an established community online.

This session will briefly describe several IMCoP cases and then unpack the findings of the case study research in terms of their importance for community designers, managers and facilitators.

Start with a Small, Safe Test: Experimenting with Communities of Practice in Associations
Jeff De Cagna
Chief Strategist and Founder, Principled Innovation LLC

In recent months, many association leaders have become interested in leveraging the strategic value of communities of practice, but are unsure how to go about doing it.  Associations often lack the financial and staff resources to launch communities of practice on a large scale basis.  And some associations rely too heavily on sophisticated yet costly technology tools to initiate CoPs on the premise of  "if you build it, they will come."  This presentation will explain to association leaders how to develop a manageable strategic experiment with communities of practice that will help to develop a deeper organizational capacity for community building and create a platform for long-term success!
