Creating Online Communities for Higher Education New Approaches to Faculty Support, Student Learning, and Staff Development though Online Communities
What is an online workshop?
Online workshops are conducted entirely over the Internet, with some additional activities carried out via Voice over IP. Participants access the workshop directly from their computers through a secure website that includes a variety of collaboration, communication, and learning tools. Like traditional face-to-face workshops, online workshops provide access to narrated presentations, networking sessions with other participants, and a variety of resources including white papers, articles, tools and templates, reference lists, and other information. The entire workshop is accessible using a standard web browser and attendees can login and participate at any time that fits their schedule, day or night.
Who should attend this conference? If you are interested in or responsible for any of the following areas, this workshop is for you:
- Online learning communities associated with hybrid or distance education and professional development programs
- Faculty development and support, particularly for faculty who are new to online courses
- Professional development for instructional technologists and learning designers
- Graduate students or teaching assistants who are part of a hybrid or distance education program
- Researchers interested in online communities
What does it cost to attend?
The registration fee is US $399. Register on or before the Early-bird special date and receive US $50 off the registration fee for a rate of US $349.
Are there discounts for institutional teams? If three individuals from an institution register, registration fees for the fourth participant from the same institution are waived. Why does the workshop last for four weeks? The workshop lasts for four weeks to ensure that you have ample opportunity to see all presentations, ask questions and obtain answers, complete hands-on projects, and network with other participants. Since most presentations, discussions, and breakout group areas involve asynchronous (over time) interactions, the four weeks also allows sufficient time for people to login and participate in ways that fit their busy schedules.
How much time do I need to allocate to get the most benefit from the workshop?
Viewing presentations, completing readings, working on hands-on projects, filling out worksheets, and participating in the weekly synchronous sessions will involve a minimum of
three hours per week. Those who participate intensely and use the workshop to develop full working community prototypes may spend up to six to eight hours per week.
What are the technical requirements to participate?
To participate, you will need an Internet connection (at least 56K recommended), a web browser, and a computer headset with microphone. If you're using Windows, you'll need either Internet Explorer version 5 or later or Netscape Navigator version 6.2 or later. If you're using a Mac, you'll need Netscape Navigator 6.2 or later or Mozilla Firefox 1.5 or later.
