Associations and Social Responsibility:
Carrying the Movement Forward October 14-16, 2008
A message from John Graham, CEO, ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership about the phase two of the Global Summit on Social Responsibility:
Wow! So much has happened sincethe Global Summit on Social Responsibility four and a half months ago that we want to update you on the progress and invite you to a free online summit, October 14-16, geared around next steps.
As you may know, myriad Project Action Teams emerged from the summit and have since been consolidated into 16 distinct working groups composed of volunteers from associations, nonprofits, and business partners. All of these teams have identified short, mid-, and long-term goals, as well as barriers and action steps.
One of the most exciting projects is ready for your review and feedback: a set of volunteer Principles for Socially Responsible Associations. This draft provides a wonderful rallying point for associations interested in determining how they and their members can help solve serious social, economic, and environmental problems while simultaneously strengthening their own organizations. These principles cover a spectrum of association-related concerns, operations, and business opportunities. They align closely with the widely vetted principles of the United Nations' Global Compact, signed by more than 4,000 corporations committed to greater social responsibility.
The Principles Project Action Team will review all feedback, revise the draft, and submit it for presentation to the boards of directors of ASAE, and The Center for Association Leadership in November. Once approved, a community-wide effort to collect signatures and commitments will begin, and the social responsibility movement within the association sector will launch into an even greater growth period.
On October 6, the online summit site will go live so you can share your thoughts during this follow-up event to the Global Summit Associations and Social Responsibility: Carrying the Movement Forward, October 14-16. The event is free and 100-percent online you don't have to leave your desk or even commit all of your time to it. Simply log in using the username and password you had for the Global Summit on Social Responsibility. Thanks to our technology and strategy partner, iCohere, you'll be able to click in and out of the event anytime, accessing and participating in only those parts of the conference you most want to attend without interfering with your workload and other commitments.
Registration for this online summit is free and available to anyone who wants to help carry the movement, so please pass on this invitation to your friends and colleagues interested in Social Responsibility. You'll learn what other associations are doing on social responsibility, and hear guidance from top experts on creating sustainable value from your own efforts. We sincerely hope you will share your ideas, stories, and feedback as we continue to pilot new ways to include the perspectives and knowledge of your colleagues around the world.
By taking a next step in this journey, associations can address many of our own business challenges: recruiting and retaining members, attracting top talent, generating new revenues, boosting efficiency and innovation, raising our visibility and image, establishing valuable new partnerships, and forwarding our mission in imaginative ways.
